How to Remodel Your Kitchen on a Shoestring
Kitchen remodeling increases the value of your home, enhances its beauty, and makes your work area more efficient. The problem is that remodeling a kitchen is often an expensive project. New appliances, flooring, cabinets, and paint or wallpaper all add up.
Here's how you can remodel your kitchen and save money while you're doing it.
Do-it-yourself kitchen remodeling.
This is the most inexpensive way to go if you have the time, skills, and knowledge. Consider renting tools instead of buying them for a one-time project.
Buy materials at contractor prices.
This isn't always an option but it's certainly worth a try. Contractors buy remodeling supplies and appliances at a discounted rate that falls somewhere between what the retailer paid wholesale and the cost for over-the-counter consumers. What legally constitutes a contractor differs from one state to another. You may be required to apply for a contractor's license.
Negotiate with the home improvement store.
When times are tough economically and home improvement stores, lumber yards, and other sources of kitchen remodeling products aren't moving their stock, you might be able to broker a deal. Key points to help you successfully negotiate a lower price include:
- Buy most or all of the remodeling supplies at once
- Pay cash or credit card up front
- Transport purchases yourself
Talk to the manager who can make pricing decisions, explain your project and desire to contain costs, and see if he or she can lower your retail cost. The answer might be no and then again, the answer might be yes.
Hire the right contractor.
Ask for estimates from at least two or three contractors. Check the Better Business Bureau for complaints and talk to references. A good contractor has favorable reviews from both.
Pay cash as you go.
There may be a time when accumulating credit card or other forms of debt for a kitchen remodeling product is absolutely necessary. In most cases, it's best to avoid accumulating debt. A loan has to be paid back with interest and the interest you pay adds to the cost of the project and is money spent with nothing to show for it. Paying cash means you know exactly how much your new kitchen is costing you.
There are ways to save money and still get the kitchen remodeled. Use these tips to get started.
