Kitchen Remodeling Without Breaking the Bank

Kitchen remodeling is still one of the best ways of adding value to your home, and even in a difficult economy many homeowners are giving their kitchens a face-lift. The National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) reports that in 2007 $96 billion were spent remodeling 7.6 million kitchens; that's a lot of kitchens being upgraded during an economic downturn. Remodeling your kitchen can make your home more attractive to potential buyers when the time comes to sell, but it can also make the room more enjoyable to work and gather in and may even freshen up your entire house.

Minor Kitchen Remodeling Projects Can Be Good Investments

Completely remodeling your kitchen can get expensive, but there are minor projects that can keep your kitchen renovation cost low and still increase the value of your home. Remodeling Magazine's annual cost vs. value survey for 2009 shows that even minor kitchen remodeling can return up to 78 percent of your costs when you sell, and if you don't plan to sell anytime soon, that return might even go up as home values begin to rise again. A few inexpensive changes you might try that should keep your kitchen renovation cost to a minimum are:

  • new cabinet and drawer hardware--Replace your old tarnished cabinet and drawer hardware with one of the many styles available at home improvement stores. Make sure the new hardware matches the drilled holes in your cabinets and this project should be so simple anyone could do it.
  • energy-saving appliances--Save money and increase your home's value at the same time and energy saving appliances should catch the eye of any prospective buyer. You may even be eligible for a federal tax credit if you purchase Energy Star appliances.
  • new resilient vinyl flooring--You may not realize how old and drab your kitchen flooring was until new flooring goes in; a new floor can completely change the look of your kitchen.
  • laminate countertops--Replace your old stained countertops with new laminate tops that are much less expensive than granite and are available in over a hundred colors.
  • paint your cabinets--Your cabinets might have looked fresh and new when your home was built, but perhaps not so much now. Painted cabinets can brighten up your entire kitchen.

These minor kitchen remodeling projects should be quick and easy and result in an upgraded kitchen that helps increase the value of your home.
